10 Simple Gym Etiquettes

  1. ALWAYS RE-RACK THE DUMBBELLS AFTER USE :

    • Once you are done with your set , keep the dumbbell in its place instead of leaving it on the floor or keeping it on the wrong place . Usually there are stickers which display where the dumbbell is supposed to be kept on the rack . It becomes very difficult and annoying for the next person to find the dumbbell if it is kept somewhere else .

  2. LEARN TO ALWAYS USE A TOWEL :

    • At the time when you use the bench , mat or lying down on anything , or wherever you are going to touch your torso , always remember to use a towel . It is because during workout people sweat a lot . Without a towel , all your sweat will stick to the mat / bench or any other equipment making it unhygienic for the next person to workout .

  3. STOP PLAYING THE STARE GAME :

       

    • You come to the gym to workout and get fit . So , it is better to focus on your own workout and keeping your eyes with yourself by not staring someone else and making things awkward . Same thing goes in the changing room because everyone will not have their own private locker room and so it is better to mind your own business and stop being creepy .

  4. ALWAYS LEARN TO SHARE :

    • You are not the only member working out at the gym . It is meant to be for everyone . If someone asks if they can work in with the same equipment you are using alternately , do say a yes . As it is you will be resting for a short span after every set during which they can use it . And please do not leave your towel on that equipment after your set and expecting the machine to be available after you return .

  5. START USING A DEODORANT :

    • During workout people sweat , and that sweat stinks . Gyms are air conditioned and so it stinks even more in such an environment . So always use a deodorant before and during workout depending upon the amount of your perspiration . But let me tell you ,  perfume and sweat do not go well . So always prefer a deodorant .

  6. DO NOT TEXT OR MAKE CALLS ONE A MACHINE :

    • These days everyone has become a cell phone addict . But while you are on a machine and if you get an important call or text , leave the machine and go to some non-workout zone to attend it . Sitting on a machine texting or attending a call is not counted as working out and it also annoys the person who is waiting to use it after you .

  7. STOP ADVISING PEOPLE IF YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED : 

       

    • Until and unless you are a certified trainer , you will not advise people about their form , exercise and diet . Also it is advisable not to go around the gym correcting people without their permission . Many do not like it . You might also land up injuring someone if you give the wrong form to someone .

  8. DRESS PROPERLY :

    • This goes to men as well as women . For men , no one at the gym is interested in looking at your torn/dirty clothing or your underwear peeking through your pants . Learn to dress properly and please do not opt to go shirtless due to the sweat . For women , it is advisable to  always prefer wearing a sports bra and cover yourself properly . This will also help in avoiding distraction .

  9. YES WE CAN HEAR YOU CLEARLY AND WE DO NOT LIKE IT :

    • There are a few people who will shout to the top of their voice on every rep they do irrespective of the size of weights they would be carrying . This is distracting and irritating for others around . So stop shouting to the top of your voice on every rep . At times , during the last couple of reps of the last set is understandable .

  10. MANAGE YOUR TIME DURING PEAK HOURS :

    • During peak hours there is a stipulated time allotted to every cardio equipment (treadmill , elliptical , etc ) . It is recommended to use those equipment for a limited amount of time so everyone gets to use it . It is not advisable to be on a treadmill for an hour during peak hours when there are people waiting for their turn .
